Palisades closed in May 2022 but is set to reopen after receiving a $1.52 billion loan from the federal government. Holtec has campaigned to reopen the plant with the support of Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Tihange Nuclear Plant in Belgium.

Belgium

Belgium has had a phase out policy for their nuclear plants for many years. Doel 4 and Tihange 3, the newest of the countries 7 reactors were set to close in 2025 but the war in Ukraine has altered Belgian energy policy. For energy security, Belgium elected to extend the lives of both reactors by 10 years. Belgium had been warned of electricity shortages in coming winters without the extension.

Diablo Canyon, California’s last remaining nuclear plant.

In December, 2023, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) granted PG&E a 5 year extension for Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant’s 2 units, until 2029 and 2030. The extension was granted to avoid shortages of electricity in scenarios like extreme weather such as heat events like the state experienced in 2020 and 2022.
